     Clare Valley, South Australia

Penna Lane’s beautiful 35 acre vineyard in the Skilly Hills in the Clare Valley South Australia was created by the hard labor of owners Ray & Lynette Klavins with help from their friends. They transformed a neglected part of an old dairy farm into a vineyard and winery that produces award winning dry grown wines.

Located at approx. 450m elevation, the vineyard is ideally located to provide a long, slow ripening period that result in intense varietal fruit flavors. Penna Lane grapes are usually the last to be picked in the Clare Valley. The vines are virtually dry-grown, receiving only limited supplementary irrigation in particularly dry years. The vineyard is extremely labor-intensive, which is in keeping with their philosophy that wine is made in the vineyard.

2002 Semillon

Produced from a patch of 30-year-old un-irrigated vines. The drought conditions of the growing season resulted in significant yield reductions compensated for by great varietal fruit intensity.  The wine exhibits vibrant green hues and a lifted lemony, nutty aroma.  Lees stirring and aging in older French oak barriques have imparted a generous creamy mouth-feel. This lovely, fresh fruit driven style will develop further complexity with 3-4 years aging. An ideal seafood and salad wine but also great accompaniment for chicken, veal and pasta.

2004 Riesling

This single vineyard wine is crafted from hand picked and hand pruned low yielding vines.  It is an intensely aromatic wine with lifted lime and orange blossom scents.  Concentrated and persistent citrus and tropical flavors on the palate are balanced by refreshingly clean, zesty acidity. A wine to be enjoyed in its youth or after several years of bottle aging. Try with oysters, fish and poultry or on its own.  Australian Boutique Winemakers Award for best boutique Riesling 2003 Gold medal and Trophy.

200I Shiraz

Deep crimson in color, this full bodied  wine exhibits lifted blackberry and spicy aromas with lovely cedary oak complexities.  Maturation for 18 months in new and older American oak hogsheads imparts a further dimension to the wine The wine was bottled without filtration in order to preserve its generous, rich fruit flavors. This wine is a perfect accompaniment to a wide range of full flavored foods including beef, kangaroo, lamb and pasta.

2001 Cabernet Sauvignon

A hot and dry summer in the Clare Valley resulted in our low yielding vines producing concentrated, full flavoured reds. This estate grown Cabernet displays intense mulberry and mint aromas followed by flavorsome fruit on the palate and balanced by elegant natural tannins. Maturation in a combination of one, two and three year old French oak hogsheads adds further complexity to a well integrated wine. Very much a good food wine, this Cabernet will go well with duck, game, lamb and beef dishes.
